[EVENT] Machine Out of Time (D5 LE)

An weird-looking Jinglot has been spotted in the southern grasslands. According to eyewitness reports, it has been indiscriminately attacking the other monsters in the area.

Some people claim that the Construct was sent back in time from the future to terminate monsters that will one day become champions, but those people are probably idiots. In any event, someone needs to stop it!

(Remember, it takes extra time slots to join this event, due to grasslands.)

Participants: Any number of Wranglers and their monsters.

Rules: Characters participating in this thread make each of the indicated Skill Rolls listed below.

  • Tracking It Down: Chasma nest in large, bulbous hives made from regurgitated wood pulp. In order to destroy the nests, characters will first have to find them.

Each character makes a Knowledge: Nature (Mind) Skill Roll at a Difficulty 2. The character's Bonded monsters can assist her, transforming this into a Cooperative Roll (i.e., each character makes a Skill Roll, and all the successes are added together before consulting the Difficulty). Note that for monsters, who lack Skills, this will be a straight Mind Roll.

On a success, the character finds the Jinglot. The character gains 2 Termination Points, plus 1 Termination Point per spent Raise. On a failure, the character gains no Termination Points and spends the evening wandering in the grasslands in search of the Jinglot and cannot advance further in this event.

Evasive Maneuvers!: The Jinglot opens fire on the characters with its electricity cannon! Each character makes a Difficulty 5 Athletics (Speed) Skill Roll to leap for cover behind a rock or fallen tree. The character's Bonded monsters can assist her, transforming this into a Cooperative Roll (i.e., each character makes a Skill Roll, and all the successes are added together before consulting the Difficulty). Note that for monsters, who lack Skills, this will be a straight Speed Roll.

On a success, the character evades the attack and gains 3 Termination Points, plus 1 Termination Point per spent Raise. On a failure, the character and each of their participating monsters suffers 1 damage, ignoring Armor, for each point by which they fail to meet the Difficulty. (Thus, if a character had a final result of 2, they and each of their monsters would suffer 3 Damage, ignoring Armor.)

Calculate Weak Points!: It has to have a weakness...

Each character makes an Engineering (Mind) Skill Roll at Difficulty 2 to assess the machine's weak points. On a success, the character earns 2 Termination Points. Each Raise may be spent to improve the Success Values of all rolls made in the following "Scrap It!" section by 1.

Scrap It!: Time for a counter-attack!

Each character makes their choice of an Archery (Agility), Brawl (Strength), Firearms (Agility), Heavy Weapons (Strength), Light Weapons (Strength), or Thrown (Agility) Skill Roll at Difficulty 2 to attack the Jinglot. The character's Bonded monsters can assist her, transforming this into a Cooperative Roll (i.e., each character makes a Skill Roll, and all the successes are added together before consulting the Difficulty). Instead of making a Skill Roll as noted above, each monster makes a single Tech Roll with one of their Techniques.

On a success, the character damages the Jinglot and earns 2 Termination Points, plus 1 Termination Point per spent Raise. On a failure, the character and their monsters fail to damage the machine and each suffer 1 Damage from its counter-attacks.

Conclusion: At the end of the event, the Termination Points earned by each character will be compared, and the character with the most Termination Points will land the final blow on the machine.

Everyone who found the monster will receive the thanks of the city and will receive 20 onz from AMBA for helping deal with the weird Jinglot. The character with the most Termination Points may bond with the (now Decrepit) Construct as it reboots, with no roll necessary.

(Note: This is a special shiny Jinglot, so it's gonna be weird.)

Things started out good. She didn't have too much trouble tracking the Jinglot down. 2 Termination Points

Then, there was the rest of the adventure. It started out by the Jinglot firing it's cannon at them. Ashley tried to protect her monsters, but really she only caused them all to be hit by cannon. 0 Termination Points

Ashley Elle takes 3 Damage
Mr. Wiggles takes 3 Damage
Miss Sparkles takes 3 Damage

She tries to come up with a plan. "Damn it! I'm a pop star, not an engineer." 0 Termination Points

Ashley and her monsters begin their counter attack, but it proves mostly enough to drive the Jinglot off rather than cause significant damage. 2 Termination Points

4 Termination Points Total

by Fiadh
Fiadh had no idea what a construct was, except people were calling it a big monster to fight. That alone was enough to convince the girl and her dragon to go hunt the creature!

Finding it wasn't difficult, however in finding it the two took a hit. Fiadh sent Riki to the side and a two-pronged attack of arrow barrage and huge magma ball of firey death seemed to be a lot more effective when combined with others attacking.

(ooc:
Roll 1 - D5 LE event Tracking It Down. Nature (Mind) at dif 2, co-op with Riki: 7d10h7 3 1 raise spent so total of 3 termination points
Roll 2 - D5 LE event Evasive Maneuvers! Athletics (speed) dif 5, co-op with Riki: 6d10h7 4 Fiadh and Riki both take 1 damage
Roll 3 - D5 LE event Calculate Weak Points! Engineering (Mind) roll dif 2: 3d10h7 2 passed 2 points
Roll 4 - D5 LE event Scrap It! Archery (Agility) co-op with Rikis Magma Heave. Dif 2: 10d10h7 8 1 extra raise from Signature tech means passed with 7 raises for a total of 9 points

Total points: 14 points

The talk about some big monster appearing and attacking other monsters had Milo intrigued. He travels there with Diva and joins in the subjugation efforts. This was his second evening spent helping Crayton and it felt good. He was a bit excited to see it.

The large construct ultimately wasn't hard to track down, but it was tough to close with safely. It was an excellent shot with that ranged electric weapon it used so often. Luckily, there was an old broken down car that Milo and Diva used as cover to get closer with it. Milo peeks around it to try identifying some weak spots. To him it looks vulnerable at its joints; its legs and arms could be used to weaken it, then a hit to the head to hopefully mess up its sensors.

With a plan of attack, and other wranglers and their monsters hitting it hard, Milo and Diva use ranged attacks (stones and far more effective shards of ice) to help put the unusual Jinglot out of commission.

-----
Tracking It Down difficulty 2 = Success with 2 raises (4 termination points)
Evasive Maneuvers: Using Lucky (3 termination points)
Calculate weak points difficulty 2 = success +1 raise (2 termination points and +1 success value to Scrap It!)
Scrap it difficulty 2 = Success with 3 raises (5 termination points)

Engineering skill kit used once [down to 2/5 uses left]

Total: 14 Termination Points

Another day, another pest control opportunity.

True, she'd found the stroll out of town a bit on the long side, but...

But even with my winnings, keeping a bit of extra money coming in makes sense...

Tracking the machine down wasn't too tricky for her... she wasn't a GREAT trapper, but Calico and Orlok knew their way around the wilderness well enough.

But being shot at? THAT sucked.

At least this shirt was about toast anyway, because that scorch mark is NEVER coming off. Ow, ow, ow.

She wasn't an engineer any more than she was a doctor, but she spotted a sparking bit and figured it was worth a shot at.

So she pitched rocks at it while Orlok attacked the machine's mind and helped freeze it in place for others trying to take it out.

[Finding the Jinglot- Knowledge: Nature/Mind, Co-Op With Orlok, Difficulty 2: 5d10h7 4- success plus 2 raises, 4 Termination Points

Difficulty 5(!) Athletics/Speed co-op with Orlok to avoid getting zapped: 7d10h7 3- Failure, she and Orlok each take 2 damage

Calculate Weak Point, Mind Difficulty 2: 2d10h7 2. Wat. 2 termination points, success value on Scrap It! improved by 1.

"Scrap It!" Difficulty 2 Agility (for throwing rocks) plus Orlok's Psychic Assault plus energy: 8d10h6 4 success plus 2 raises, 4 Termination Points

10 Termination points, to my not-inconsiderable surprise]

Mara and Blitz began tracking down the weird Jinglot. They weren't the best trackers but it wasn't too hard to find. The Jinglot opened fire with its electricity cannon, but the pair danced around the field, dodging every attack. Mara didn't know too much about engineering but that one panel looked rusty . She picked up a rock and let fly just as Blitz crashed in with her Horns. The Jinglot looked pretty smashed up by the time they finished with it.

Knowledge nature mind co-op with Blitz diff 2 -2 Success: 2 termination points
Athletics speed co-op with blitz-6 Success+1 Raise: 4 termination points
Engineering/mind diff 2-Success: 2 termination points
Mara throws a rock, Blitz hornbutt 1+3=Success+ 2raises 4 termination points
=12 termination points

by Carl Heinrich Mauser
Carl Heinrich and his war wolf made their way silently through the tall grasses, following the broken grass left in the wake of the heavy-footed Jinglot. On his back he bore a cardboard box that had been converted into a monster carrier for his new slime-fish pet. The boy engineer held a vaguely gun-shaped contraption at a low ready position. The weapon had once been labeled “BUG ZAPPER MK3”, but someone had taken a permanent marker to it, crossing out the first word and relabeling the weapon “JINGLOT ZAPPER MK3”.

Suddenly the boy could see the red diodes of the Jinglot’s eyes just ahead. It looked like the eyes were turning … turning to look right at them!

“ATTACK PATTERN 67!” he shouted. The Jinglot’s energy cannon opened fire, giving Carl Heinrich a powerful shock; his glasses flew off as the boy dived for the ground. Killbot Rex growled and leaped to attack the Jinglot, while the loxabox in Carl’s makeshift backpack wailed in terror. Raising his weapon, the boy engineer unleashed several blasts from the Jinglot Zapper into the vaguely humanoid-shaped blur ahead of him.

Suddenly, the grassy field was silent. The fight was over… apparently? Killbot Rex returned to his master, wagging its tail; a little damaged but still operational. Carl Heinrich put the war wolf in self-repair mode as he searched around for his glasses.

After finding his glasses, Carl Heinrich put them back on and found that he had thoroughly blasted an old tree stump that had seemed much more threatening when it had been looming over him earlier.

“I guess that stupid Jinglot ran away,” he told the war wolf. “We must have scared it off.” Rex barked agreement.

Sam seem to be called to the grasslands and she found the weird jinglot. The jinglot had found its target. Sam wasn't ready for the charge as she became a toasty human. "Ouch..." She tried to come up with a plan to stop it but really what Sam knows is brute force. Ginger was pissed that her pillow (Sam) was hurt. The little gympix attacked the creature and damaged it as Sam punched it. It left the two alone.

Antony isn't a naturalist, but enough dicking around through the woods over the years means that he generally knows about pest..mostly to avoid Rocky trying to eat them. So looking for a wild Jingolot isn't the craziest thing he's done. Avoiding the thing is another story as electricity cracks along the pair.

Freaking bum leg. I wish this was a dumbest mess we've gotten into

But up this close, Antony could see the machine workings.

"Huh. It would be a real shame if conductor fluid got into electrical cannon, huh? Cover me with some light Rock!""

The machine creature flashes, giving Antony a chance to chuck it into the maw of the machine

Just as the Jinglot is starting to slow down, electricity crackles around it and a duplicate of itself appears beside it, a past (or future?) version of itself yanked out of the time stream as way of reinforcement. Fortunately, Fiadh, Milo, and their monsters are able to land the killing blows on the construct, damaging it and forcing its artificial intelligence to factory reset. The two robots beep a few times before asking for administrative logins.

(Fiadh and Milo can each bond with a weird Jinglot.)
(Fiadh, Milo, Antony, Carl, Mara, Calico, Ashley, and Sam each receive 20 onz for helping out.)
